All patients needing to see a doctor will be offered a pre-bookable telephone consultation or appointment up to 3 weeks in advance. This should allow you to see the doctor of your choice. Surgeries are run every morning and afternoon.

If your problem cannot wait until the next available pre-bookable appointment, a dedicated duty doctor will be on hand each day to assist.

Accountable GP

Please note that all patients at Southbourne Surgery have a named accountable GP. Please be assured that this is for overview of your care within the practice, you are still free to see any doctor you wish.

Urgent Appointments

We have a number of appointments available on the day for urgent appointments only.  If these appointments have all been used by the time you call in, a receptionist will take your phone number and a brief outline of the problem and our triage clinician will call you back. If your problem is particularly urgent please tell the receptionist and your call will be answered as a priority, however please be aware that the clinicians may be dealing with other urgent cases, if in doubt please call 999 for very urgent medical problems.

The triage clinician is Mr Ed Gardner, who is an Emergency Care Practitioner. He will clarify your medical need and offer advice such as:

  1. Advice over the telephone
  2. An appointment with the nurse or health care assistant if appropriate
  3. A future appointment with one of our doctors
  4. A same day appointment with another doctor, if available
  5. An appointment with one of the Duty Team that day

We have trained nurses and an Emergency Care Practitioner that run daily Minor Illness clinics (coughs/colds/rashes etc.), which are booked on the day. All other routine nurse appointments may be booked up to 1 month in advance. Our receptionists have been asked to guide you towards the most appropriate Practitioner. Mr Ed Gardner, our Emergency Care Practitioner also has bookable appointments for muscular problems.

If you feel you would like a chaperone present at your consultation, please inform the receptionist at the time of booking your appointment or inform your doctor/nurse during your appointment. We are happy to arrange this for you.

Choose Well - Minor Injuries Service

If you have an accident within the last 72 hours and have tried home first aid which has not helped, we are able to act as a 'minor injury unit' so that you do not have to use an Accident and Emergency department. We offer this service to both registered and non-registered patients.

Examples of accidents we can assist with are falls, cuts & grazes & animal bites, joint sprains and minor burns. Please note that we do not have X-ray facilities.

Text Reminder Service

We offer a text reminder service to your mobile phone to remind you of your appointment. Please ensure that your details are kept up to date with reception. If you wish to opt out of this service, please fill in a form at reception.

Patient Late Arrivals for Appointments

Please try to make sure you arrive in good time for your appointment, taking into account journey times when booking appointments and planning your arrival.
We do understand that an occasional delay is unavoidable therefore if you do arrive late, it is at the discretion of the Clinicians whether you are seen, however, patients will generally be asked to rebook. Late arrivals that lead to cancellations cause an appointment to be wasted which could have otherwise been used. It is important that you arrive on time.
Please also remember that one patient’s late arrival can have knock on effects on other patients’ appointment times, causing the Clinicians to run late.

Patient 'Did Not Attend' Appointments

We understand the need for patients to be seen by a clinician as soon as possible and will always do our best to ensure you are seen. It is therefore essential that if you have an appointment, you make sure you attend. A considerable amount valuable of appointments are lost each month because of non-attenders (DNA).

As a result of DNAs the practice and its patients have to deal with the effects of:

  • Increased waiting times
  • Frustration to the Doctors, Nurses, Reception & other patients
  • A waste of resources

The Practice does have text messaging reminder system implemented. This will send you a text message reminder of your appointment. If you do not receive such texts, please update your mobile number with reception.

We would like to thank you for your co-operation in these matters.
