Patient Participation

Southbourne Surgery's Patient Participation Group (PPG) comprises volunteers who are all Southbourne patients. We hold meetings at the Surgery 2 or 3 times a year at which we discuss a range of topics that include the latest news from the surgery such as staff changes and new initiatives. We also discuss the findings of the surgery surveys or questionnaires, complaints, and give our views on how well things are working or might be improved. The surgery staff is represented at the meeting by the manager, the patient liaison co-ordinator Claire McCann, and a doctor if available. From time to time, other staff members and practitioners attend to tell us about their work.

Integrated Care System and local needs

Recent changes to the National Health Service, both locally and nationally, mean that decisions made by the people who commission services and hold budgets—in our case in Southbourne, in the Chichester Area and in West Sussex—must be based on local needs and feedback from patients. There is also a drive to integrate Primary Health Care with care services normally provided by the local councils who must also involve residents.

Why your views are important

Southbourne PPG has been sending two members to a Chichester area group comprising representatives from the 8 surgeries in the Chichester Alliance of Medical Practices(ChAMP). As part of the NHS plans, ChAMP has been formally accepted as a Primary Care Network (PCN) and the patient group has been reconstituted as the Patient Representative Board (PRB) which represents the views and experiences of patients in the Chichester area and advises the PCN.

The members of the Southbourne Patient Participation Group include parents of young children, parents of teenagers, under and over 65s, male and female, carers, nursing home managers, patients with mobility problems, patients with chronic, long term illnesses, British & non-British patients. All these different people and their experiences are important in the shaping of Health and Care provision in our area. Although only a small proportion of them are able to come to meetings, we like to know the opinions and ideas of everyone who is interested.
