Information About Our Trainee Doctors

To ensure Southbourne Surgery has the most up to date clinicians we continue to expand our teaching role.

You may have noticed that we have GP and doctor trainees and we do understand that it can get confusing. We hope that this can go some way in explaining recent changes within medical training.

At Southbourne Surgery we currently have working:

  • ST3s (Formerly ‘Registrars’) – fully qualified doctors but not yet GPs, in their final year of GP training (usually with us for a 12 month block – August -July).
  • ST1s and ST2s – fully qualified doctors on their early pathway to being a GP (usually with us for a 4 month block).
  • FY2 (Foundation Drs) – These doctors have been qualified for a year and are here to gain GP experience. They may, however, go on to specialise in any area from brain surgery to cardiology. Our FY2 doctors will often (but not always) speak to their supervising doctor when you see them.  (They are usually with us for a 4 month block.).

All our trainees have been allocated a supervising doctor within the practice who will support as required.

If you have a specific doctor whom you wish to see, please ask at the time of booking and the receptionists will do their best to accommodate your needs.

Medical Students – Our medical students are all within their medical training at Southampton University. If you are seen by a medical student you will always be seen by a Senior Doctor as well.

We are very grateful for the support of our patients with our trainees and your involvement and patience is hugely appreciated.

Further information regarding the training practice can be found here.
